Barcelona star Lionel Messi has matched the the long
standing record held by legendary Athletic Club Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra, for
career goals whilst playing for one club in Spain.
A record that has stood for decades was matched by Lionel
Messi on Wednesday night, with a magical goal against Real Sociedad in the
semi-final second-leg of the Copa del Rey. His 335th goal in 404 competitive
matches for Barcelona.
That figure now places him alongside the legendary Athletic
Club Bilbao striker of the 1940′s and 1950′s, Telmo Zarra, widely regarded as
the greatest striker ever to have graced Spanish football. Zarra achieved his
feat of 335 goals in 354 official matches.
The next goal that Messi scores will see him break beyond
that record, to become the player to have scored the most goals in the shirt of
one club, when he inevitably next finds the back of the net, consigning yet
another landmark in his glittering career with Barcelona, whilst still only
26-years-old.
